All the fine print

Booking Policy

It is our policy for those hunters booking a hunt a year or more in advance that a partial non-refundable deposit of 25% of the normal 50% deposit on guided hunts or a partial non-refundable deposit of 25% of the normal 50% deposit for each hunter in a drop camp will guarantee the hunt at the current price and the first choice of dates if booked by July 1. An additional deposit equaling 50% of the total hunt price less the partial non-refundable deposit shall be received in our office no later than before December 1 of the year preceding the hunt or the booking may be considered as a cancellation and may be sold to someone else. All credit card payments are subject to 3% transaction fee.

For those booking 1-2 years in advance that are interested in hunts with licenses on a draw, we suggest you apply for the preference points in the 2023 drawing to give you better odds at drawing a license in the year in which you choose to hunt. The advantage of booking well in advance is as follows:

  1. Save on price increases.

  2. Book now and you will not have a large dollar amount invested until December 1 of year preceding hunt when final deposit is required.

  3. If booked in advance, you can choose dates and hunts you desire.

  4. If you are planning one of our drawing hunts, you can accumulate preference points to give you better odds at drawing your license in the year you want to hunt.


BackCountry Outfitters requires a 25% deposit to secure a booking; payable by cashier's check, money order, personal check, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, or Discover. A second down payment of 25% is due in our office by the set dates in your contract. Any hunts with guaranteed licenses booked after 5/1 for the current year require a 50% deposit. Deposits for archery, muzzleload, 1st rifle and 4th rifle seasons will require a 25% deposit to secure the booking, and another 25% payment when we notify you of successful license draw (in June). Deposits will be treated as to the terms of our normal requirements. Balance of fee is due thirty days prior to hunt and is payable by cashier's check, money order, personal check, or credit card. All credit card payments are subject to 3% transaction fee. The terms of the deposit shall commence upon execution and continue until terminated by the client, with or without cause (by written notice) for hunts, mailed to the outfitter at: PO Box 4190, Pagosa Springs, CO 81157. Deposits on public land hunts are non-refundable but are transferable to another hunt for which we may have openings, or can be carried forward for up to 2 years without a price increase. Deposits on private land hunts cannot be carried forward to another year, but can be transferred to another new hunter for the same hunt. On a drawing hunt, we will refund a deposit (if the client doesn't draw a license) in the event we are able to rebook the hunt with another hunter.


In the event that our cabins are booked, Durango and Pagosa Springs offer several options for lodging. We would be happy to make reservations for you, if you'd like. We offer transportation from and to Durango hotels. Unfortunately, accommodations for the night before you pack-in or after you pack-out are not included in the price of your hunt.


BackCountry Outfitters is located about 40 miles east of the Durango Colorado airport. We are more than happy to offer transportation from and to hotels in Durango. Please let us know where you are staying, and we'll arrange to pick you up the day you pack-in, and return you following pack-out.
